    Two true factoids about quotas and "diversity".

    I'm old enough to remember when race was not the focus of every action. When I applied to college I was accepted without an interview. I did all the forms and tests and applications, but the university never asked about or knew my race, skin color, ethnic background, etc. So they had no way to discriminate! 

    Until, of course, a law was passed and they had to ask over 12,000 undergraduates about  those things so they could be fair.

    Part #2 - - -Victoria is now a graduate student at Columbia. She just took an exam and was reading material in the kitchen Sunday . . . a brief outrage on her part came from her tracher's classification of people. Seems there are women, and "other".

      I don't always agree with Hugh on things of a political nature, but I actually find that I do agree with the post he sent. :-)  I am all for cultural diversity, having written my Masters thesis on the subject, but I believe we become proponents of reverse discrimination when we have quotas.  When it comes to colleges, it should be based on the merits of the individual regardless of their color, their ethnicity, gender, who they know, etc.  Entrance into a college should be based on the student's merit in many areas - academic and otherwise, and don't necessarily include SAT test results.  I believe that the testing process needs to be changed because I do see some bias in the entrance exams, but that's food for another thread. :-)

      No, Gale, I would not consider you a bigot if you voted to eliminate quotas.  IMHO, the quota system was designed to alleviate the guilt our country/government had for their actions in the 60's with the ideas of racial separation, to gain the respect of those who had been held back because of their skin color and for no other reason.

        Friends,
          With the election coming up, there is a proposal on the Michigan ballot.  I don't know the exact title or the wording.  But it has to do with eliminating quotas, or admissions or favorable inclusion on the basis of race, national origin, sex, underwear size, et al.   That everyone is on the same ground regardless when these issues are decided.
           This all started when a white student was denied admission to the University of Michigan's Medical School while others with lesser grades and admission scores were admitted.  
          The ads we're being bombarded with in the media will not directly use the race card.  They talk of woman's clinics being closed because they are for woman only.  (note:  there goes my men's golf league)
           I have always been put off when someone starts a conversation saying "I'm not a bigot".  But am I if I support this proposal?  And do not support those who passing this proposal would hurt?  I seriously haven't made up my mind.  I've searched the internet for a non bias explanation and find none.  But I'll keep trying.  And would appreciate any input.
