The subways are definitely the way to go. Of course, when we do New York, we tend to walk everywhere. We've never bothered to take a cab. We've done the subways only. New York is a great place to visit, but unless you're out of the City itself, like Hugh, it's not a place to live, imo. Of course, they do have a very nice park. :-)
Stay warm in Michigan. BTW, we're taking a trip out that way this summer. Plan to show my kids where I grew up (Buchanan, near the Indiana border) and then meet up with a friend who works for Whirlpool in Benton Harbor, my birthplace. We'll drive up to the Northern Peninsula and then over so that we end up in Minnesota. We'll visit my dad and the Iron Range where we moved to when I was in Jr.High. They're having an all-class reunion. They have them every 5 years to drink the town dry. Hey...it's a mining area. :-)

(Bill:)
Be sure to use only the legitimate Yellow (actually orange) with medallion numbers. Others may be unlicensed "gypsy" cabs in questionable condition with even more questionable drivers.
Thanks for the advise Bill. Next time for sure. One takes their life in their hands just riding in a cab, registered or not. My sister has not lived in NYC all that long, but now thinks of herself as a native New Yorker. Hardly!!!
Limos can be good deals for groups but watch out for the unmarked vans because I've had a couple of unpleasant experiences with them despite catching them at the LGA airport and the Sheraton Towers.
Fool that I am, I said I'd pay for our next "cab" ride. My brother in law called down for a cab and the Limo showed up. I silently growled when I saw that. Ahhhhhhhhh, live and learn. Next visit we stick to the subways. Another adventure to look forward to. :)
