You would not believe the furore this is causing. The opposition Liberal
Party (similar to your Republicans) say it is a waste of money, it is not
commercially viable, it will never be used, mobile is enough (12 GB max) and
say they will try to block it in the Senate. The truth is they would only
go for it if it was a private business imitative.
An independent senator has said he will vote against it because it is too
expensive and unnecessary. He is an idiot who is looking for any oxygen he
can get.
Telstra, our dominant Telco is remaining a bit quiet. Their huge installed
copper base will become redundant and so could they if they don't get on
board. They own the underground ducts and could refuse to cooperate. The
Government has foreshadowed breaking Telstra in tow - infrastructure and
retail. That would be good IMHO.
I think the great unwashed are too uniformed to understand and it will take
some time for them to see the benefits.
Me? I think it is fanbloodytastic. It will change our lives. Fibre is
essentially future proof. As we have seen over the last 20 years, the same
cable just goes faster as new transmitters are connected. I think it will
happen. I just hope I can wait the 8 years it will take to finish.
On the motivation side, your $ is worth considerably more down here ;-)
Cheers
David

The Australians are definitely moving out way ahead of us in one area.

How fast is your high speed Internet connection? For cablemodem
subscribers, it is usually about six to twelve megabits per second at the
most. And the Australians are going to have one hundred megabits per second
to their home on fiber? How awesome.
It is going to make our cable companies and DSL providers look like they
are in the dark ages.
That's one more (of many) motivation to move to Australia.
Regards,
Fred
