well, we did in fact have thunder and lightening storms last nite (very
unusual for feb.) and it's pretty dark around here today too.  but there
wasn't much rain or wind with them.  not very severe and certainly no
tornadoes - don't remember the wind even blowing actually.

OK, so maybe its because I just spent two weeks with only fox news' "Red Eye
 show for news (with delayed audio, no less), but something on the Today
show this morning really got to me.
 
The weather national weather person came on and said (close to actual
quotation):
 
"There is a high chance of thunderstorms in the midwest this afternoon. Now
5% of all thunderstorms get classified as severe, and 1% of severe storms
turn into tornados". 
 
On the screen . . . a map with a big "Headline: Thunderstorm Threat" banner.

 
Seems to me there is also about an equal threat to get hit by a flying ape.
