many years ago (as in 1964), I wrote down this quote by Abraham Lincoln in a book (now books) I keep of poems and quotes that take my fancy - who wudda thought all these years later I'd actually get to use it - 

While the people retain their virtue and vigilence, no administration, by any extreme of wickedness or folly, can very seriously injure the government in the short space of four years.
