High Flight was a poem written by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He died tragically in a midair accident. His parents found this poem among his things and had it published. You can read about John Gillespie Magee, Jr. at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gillespie_Magee,_Jr. .
High Flight was dedicated to the spirit of aviation and is probably the most beautiful and inspiring poem I've ever known. When mixed with the video and the beautiful expressive voice in this version, it becomes even more magnificent.
Regrettably, Dr. Phil shows up on the end of this You Tube clip. The guy who put it up should have trimmed that off. Try to ignore Dr. Phil. He kind of kills the moment.

High Flight was frequently used as television sign offs. When I worked for South Carolina Educational Television as a television transmitter operator, they often used it for the sign off. It was a real morale booster at the end of a long work day.
If you have never had the experience of being at the stick of an aircraft, find a Cessna school in your area and see if you can take a 'Discovery' flight. They used to charge only twenty dollars to take you up. The idea was to get you interested in taking lessons. There is nothing more thrilling than taking the stick of an aircraft and directing it where you want it to go.
